Office wear – How to look effortlessly smart

Dear Ladies,

Ever since I have started my full time job, I have started to wake up everyday with the same dilemma:
What am I gonna wear?!

Owning some key pieces can make your life easier and these can be reused in various outfits. In my experience, when working in an office you need to a few basics such as:

  • A few dresses
  • Tailored pants
  • Pencil Skirt
  • A few shirts
  • Court Shoes
  • Watch
  • A handbag that goes with everything!

I drew up outfits for everyday of the week just to give you an idea… As you can see, with basic key pieces you can look smart everyday.

Monday

Monday is the hardest, isn’t it? Start the week with a simple outfit. Choose a non-iron dress the day before and you’re good to go. Court shoes make you smart but with that in mind, I would look for the most comfortable pair of shoes possible. I got a chunkier heel with an orthopedic sole and it was the best choice I ever made when it comes to shoes. One of the hairstyles can always be the bun – makes you look tidy and is a good solution when you are in between washes.

Tuesday

Investing in a pair of tailored pants is vital. They are so smart and rather versatile. In summer, trousers also a good idea for those few days before you get waxed. As for earrings, I like to keep it simple and tidy and for this I think stud earrings are the best choice.

Wednesday

The pencil skirt is another staple if you work in an office (see what I did there? :P). All the shirts/tops you wear with the tailored pants can be then reused in outfits with a pencil skirt. The look would be completely different and a skirt gives a more feminine touch.

Thursday

Once again I chose the tailored pants as they are the most comfortable in my opinion. Stuck with the stud earrings but played it up a little with a detailed collar top. A little pop of colour when including blue.

Friday

There are some days when you opt for ultimate comfort and ballerina shoes come in play. As for hairstyles, it is a good idea to change from day to day, keeping it simple not to take too long to get ready. A bun, a pony tail, braids and loose hair with accent accessories is the way to go.

Office wear - Friday

As for handbags, I only use one – I managed to find a 3-tone bag which (in my opinion) goes with everything. I wouldn’t suggest changing your bag everyday… Let’s just say that I’m too lazy to do it – But if you’re not, go ahead!

When it comes to colours, I kept it simple as these are more or less the colours we are allowed to wear since I work in front office. Depending on your job, you can play it up and be more adventurous with colours and patters.

These outfits have nothing out of the ordinary and these pieces can be found from any store at average prices. Coming to think of it, it’s not all that hard to choose what to wear to the office once you have the right numbers.

That’s all from my side… I hope you found this helpful and do let me know if you have any more tricks to always look smart at the place of work!

Love,
M.

Oh, and I always wear a watch, but that’s just me  🙂

Fashion Items in Unexpected Places – A Collaboration with SportsDirect.com PART 1

Dearest Ladies,

We live in a world where we get stuck in our ways. We shop at the same stores without realizing we are paying too much! Are we too afraid to look for fashion items elsewhere? I hope not! Why pay more when there are cheaper options for the same quality? How about surfing a site which gives you great deals all year round? I’m talking about Sports Direct.com. Granted, you might not think it’s your first choice for something fashionable, but if we search the website a little harder… We might realize, it can be!

(Every image in this post directs you to the item on Sports Direct.com. – Click the image to see sizes and prices!
It is best to open links in a new tab)

  1. Jeggings

Where in the world will you find jeggings at this price? If you have an answer, other than sportsdirect.com, spill! Their prices are unbeatable and the quality is very good. Why pay more for the same quality? I’d rather get two of these pairs instead 😀 I have one of these already and they are so so great. They are the most realistically detailed jeggings I have ever seen. Everyone will be fooled into thinking that you are wearing actual skinny jeans and not jeggings! The picture on the website doesn’t do them any justice, so look out for a post which will feature these jeggings in a greater detail, NEXT WEEK!

  2. Boots

Wow – (€12.81) for a pair of boots? That’s incredible. But do you know what is even more attractive than the price for me? The fact that they are PLAIN. Oh my, every time I look for boots, I always end up being disappointed. The ones which I do like have to have something which ruins them, a large buckle, glitter or fur… or well, something that makes them not perfect – unlike this one I’m showing you right here – which is in my opinion: the perfect wedged boot. Comfortable but Smart nonetheless.

And if you like to go for something a bit more “girly-gone-military” what about something like this one here for the same price?

  3. Sunglasses

You honestly cannot possibly find a better deal! Sunglasses (currently) at 3 euros – and they do NOT look cheap! Who cares if you manage scratch them after just one summer? You won’t need to feel too guilty, at least they do not cost a fortune!

  4. Hoodies

Sure, hoodies are not your most fashionable item, but they are comfortable and you can actually do a lot with them if you choose to be creative. (click here to go to the hoodie section)

My favourites are these one colour hoodies, which cost a bit more but are currently on sale, selling for below €6! Yes, the prices are unbelievable! There are so many colours to choose from. My first preference would be this coral red one (marked as red on the website):

I like this one too… I can imagine it over a number of garments.

  5. Cardigans

This green one is just gorgeous. These cardigans are very soft and there are so many colours to choose from. Without a doubt, SportsDirect is the best place for you to stock up with basics! At just (€6.99), you can have as many colours as you like. And well, a good cardigan is always a must. I can imagine this one with a pair of chinos and a mustard vest underneath – there are so many ways you can wear a cardigan!

Apart from all the different colours, we obviously have the option of getting it in black. Don’t we all NEED a black cardi?

That concludes PART 1 of this collaboration, ladies. Stay tuned for 5 other items from this incredible website in PART 2! I really hope you find this post useful. I agree, sometimes looking up clothing items until you actually select the few you are buying, can be tiring… But here I did all the work for you, so you should have no excuses! 😉

Let me know what’s in your cart at the moment 😉

M.

London so far…

Hey Ladies!

So apparently I am a very light sleeper in London, I always wake up 1/2 hours before my alarm goes off and my friends are always still fast asleep. At least this gives me time to finally write a full post! Internet died on me this morning, so I am actually finishing it now, and it’s almost 7pm here.

IMATS

The trade show was great. All the educators did something we did NOT already know, be it glitter, body paint, runway. I feel that I have learned so many things and I am dying to try out new techniques and body paint and so much more. Good thing I got a photo-shoot coming up for which I am in charge of makeup! I did buy some stuff, but it was all stuff I either have been waiting to try for ages or stuff I needed, like a mineral foundation. Got some K CO, Real Techniques, the Beauty Blender, MAC, NYX, stencils for body paint and some other brands which I will later list down. Some great things, great shows/lectures and pretty good deals too.

The crowded hall!

Me, Matthew Ambrosio (Runway Dos and Donts) and Martina

Some amazing body paint on your ”average man” 😛

The Company

Martina prepared me to face the underground with bravery when she leaves!

Considering how little I knew the girls before we flew to London, the company was brilliant! We clicked and we laughed really hard. We shopped till we dropped,  almost literally! It was great really and I cannot wait till we meet again and share the photos and memories over some cocktails.

Oh and Johnny Depp did the best he could…

Johnny was a bit skeptical about the whole IMATS thing…

The shops and the bank account

The shops are great, my bank account, not so much! I spent a lot but I knew this would happen. If you do not shop when in London, I don’t know when you do… I got a bunch of clothes for me and my baby sis today from Primark and H&M mainly. I got some comfy flat shoes which I needed. A great pair of chinos from Zara and a bikini top which I adored from Victoria’s secret, which by the way, have the cutest changing rooms, with sofas in the waiting area and all. So, I just cannot complain, except for the annoying formality of actually having to pay for all of it 😛 We also went to the M&Ms Store which is great and I know have a green M&M soft toy to share a bed with! We visited the Disney Store today which was every child’s dream world.

Some of my buys…

I’m off now ladies. Marija and Martina have already left for Heathrow Airport but I still have till Tue/Wed Morning here to look around and see some museums and art and maybe a musical!

Off to take a walk and maybe something to drink!

What Clothes to Pack When Travelling

Hey Ladies!

My holiday is almost here and I cannot wait till I get over and done with my last exam tomorrow and then I will be all about packing! Me, Marija and Martina (from pocalocca and all things fabulous respectively) have been planning this for weeks (mostly Martina) since me and the other Marija had exams to worry about too. Saying that I am excited is understating it…

Anyway, yesterday I decided it was time to start thinking about my luggage and what stuff I need to buy BEFORE actually going to London. Number 1 was an inexpensive pair of sunglasses which I ticked off my list. I will be showing you all the stuff I got, including skincare and such in a Pre-London Haul if I have time to post it before Friday. I then started placing things on my dresser, things that will go in my suitcase, whenever I choose the one I’ll be taking.

I headed to Polyvore to get inspired on how I can get the MOST use out of the LEAST amount of clothes! And this is what I came up with. I hope you like them too:

Flying out…

flying out to london

My point was being comfortable in the heat in Malta before take off, but not feel chilly when I get there. So a very light coat in hand/hand luggage and a smart outfit paired with flats. I added some accessories to help the outfit look a bit more complete. Nothing too chunky like massive earrings which will be uncomfortable during the flight.

Day 1

what to pack to london

Using the same earrings, flats and bags, I’ll wear my new pair of leggings under a long white/cream top. A necklace of my choice to go with the outfit and again, that will be a wrap. I chose these sort of leggings since they can obviously be worn in another outfit, and they will be!

Day 2

what to pack to london #3

Same earrings. This time I alternate to a satchel bag. Jeans… Skinny jeans will also be used more than once as well as the nude comfy plimsolls (a.k.a. plimsoles). You need something comfortable to walk in, especially if the itinerary states that we have hours of shopping (We have to do what the itinerary says…) A cute polka dot top to complete the outfit.

Day 3

what to pack to london #2

Having had the leggings air for a whole day, I’ll be going back to them and the brown over-sized bag and the warm toned flats. This time a long-line black vest and some neon accessories will do the trick and another outfit is set with no major hassle or panic of “what-am-i-gonna-wear-today”.

Day 4

what to pack to london #4

Back to denim and the satchel bag and I’ll be wearing my comfy plimsolls again on my last full day to make sure I am comfy all day long. I’ll be in my London jumper since I will probably already be feeling blue about leaving so soon. Some perfume (just one) will also accompany me on my trip! I wish it was Burberry… Oh, and sunglasses! Not that we’re expecting sunny weather, but well, they never hurt.

Back to Malta 😦

flying back to malta
Coming back I plan to wear the same pair of trousers I went up in. Comfy plimsolls again and either the satchel bag or the over-sized one, depending on my luggage space and weight limitations. I won’t forget my watch this time to be careful not to miss my flight! I will be coming back alone, since my friends would have left already, so I HAVE to be super careful. A t-shirt I would have probably gotten when still in London, something that brings a little piece of London back home with me and help me with nostalgic symptoms. I won’t forget my purse with my passport and other documents. A denim shirt would be a perfect addition if the weather is a tad chilly. I’ll probably pull my hair up in a pony tail as it would have gotten messy by now, which is why I included the hair cuff.

That is pretty much it ladies. With just 3 pairs of bottoms, 2 pairs of shoes, 2 bags, 1 pair of earrings and a top-a-day, we had 6 different outfits and no, they do not look recycled! Since space is an issue, this was the best way to tackle it… you know, to come back with a tonne of stuff to wear in autumn 😉

I really hope you enjoyed this post and that it can be useful for you when travelling! Is there anything I’m forgetting? Please let me know if I am 😉

Love,
M.

What to wear and what not to wear to a Funeral

Dearest Readers,

Today I will take the plunge and talk about something we rarely talk about (by choice). Funerals are difficult for family members. After the Pretty Little Liars season premiere, I have been battling in my head whether it is appropriate to write about this. But then I thought, “When we are in doubt, we Google it…” so we do expect to find something related to the subject.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, funeral attire must show that you are grieving. In a country like Malta, some are still very traditional. Sometimes family members choose to wear just black for a long time. This is a ‘tradition’ but it is also a sign of respect and sorrow. Unfortunately I attended my fair share of funerals. Not that this is the most important thing but I do notice that while people are there to pay their respects and say final goodbyes, they are not always dressed appropriately for church and for a funeral.

I cannot stress this enough, the clothes you wear are not the most important thing, but wearing the right clothes for the situation is always important. Choosing your funeral attire should be simple; it shouldn’t be something you have to think about (not too much, at least). The focus is not you – you do not need to shine. Here are some pointers for those who are still unsure on what to wear…

Sleeve Length

A minimum cap sleeve is expected. If you are going sleeveless, a shawl or a bolero is expected. No off the shoulder pieces unless you are then, covering up – I would actually avoid them completely.

No – Too ‘Sexy’

Perfect

Colour

In Malta we tend to go for Black. Unless the family states that the deceased would have wanted people to dress as usual, i.e. colourful, it is always safe to assume that Black and White (and Grey) is what you should be going for. A white-shirt and a pencil skirt will always do the trick.

Too Much (for a funeral)

This + Bolero = Good

Cut & Fit

Nothing too sexy. You are going to a funeral, not to pick up guys at a bar. Office wear is usually smart enough unless you feel like slipping into a Little Black Dress – A midi dress would be a tad more appropriate than a little one. In MY opinion: no dip-hem skirts or crop tops. No cut out tops and dresses either. A tasteful peplum might be ok.  Your clothes should fit you well – a dress that is too short is not appropriate. Go for something smart, I am not sure about baggy trousers… You have to be your own judge, but don’t go to a funeral wearing leggings (AS PANTS…), or even worse, wet-look leggings.

Too Baggy

Too much Skin

Perfect

Also Perfect.

Pattern

Don’t go for anything fussy. I think plain is always better, especially for a funeral. If you’re wearing patterns, make sure it does not draw too much attention. I think certain lace tops, young people were wearing to one of the funerals were tacky. This is not the place to wear your Saturday night sexy stretchy body. I understand that they are young, and possibly own a neon coloured wardrobe, but a white shirt is more appropriate than ‘ħamalli’ lace.

No

Pretty, but might be a bit much for a funeral…

This will work.

Shoes

Flats are ok, but I would prefer kitten heels (No, I don’t think they are hideous…) or a mid-heel. You want to look smart but not too sexy, so stilettos might be pushing it if you are not able to walk in them. Wedges are ok if they are not massive. I would go for black shoes if possible, something elegant, something you can walk in – again, be your own judge (this post is just a few tips!).

Perfect.

Good.

Good too.

Too Flashy!

Too much

Make up

Keep it simple. Foundation and a nude lipstick. Maybe add a little bit of blusher not to look completely washed out. If you think you’re going to cry (just being realistic here…), don’t overdo it with eye make up. Otherwise stick to waterproof. I went for just a little bit of mascara and a soft coloured eyeliner on the bottom lash line. In my opinion, this is not the place for false lashes. You do not want to look overdone. You do not want to look like you were more into your looks than to mourn. Don’t go all dolled up, it doesn’t reflect positively on you if you look like you spent an hour doing your make up. Go for a natural or a ‘no make-up’ bare look.

Sunglasses

Finally, if you are going for sunglasses, don’t go for anything massive, fancy or with lots of embellishments. Something simple that  fulfills its purpose and that’s it.

Too Conspicuous!

Good Choice

Men

Men always have it easier. Just wear your suit, a grey or black one; navy blue can be ok too. A clean white shirt and a black tie. If you do not have a black tie, go for some other subtle colour. Nothing too fancy, you can keep your pink tie for some other occasion. Do not put too much gel in your hair either, it’s not that good for you anwyay.

Image source for all of the above: ASOS.com

Onto one last example:

I don’t know if you watch Pretty Little Liars, but in the first episode this season, aired last week, all the “liars” attended a funeral. This is what they wore:

Pretty Little Liars at Walden’s Funeral (Hanna, Emily, Spencer, Aria)

With Jenna in the Background… (Emily, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, Jenna)

With Mona… (Emily, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, Mona)

Hanna: While I do like her dress, this was too sexy for a funeral. As soon as I saw it, I could not stop thinking about how inappropriate it was. Don’t get me wrong, I love it… just not for a funeral.

Emily: While introducing a little bit of colour, this dress was a very good choice for Emily. Points for Emily!

Spencer: As usual, Spencer is perfect. Her outfit was smart and there wasn’t too much skin showing. Great choice indeed.

Aria: I felt that her outfit was a bit too much. You do not need to keep your style at a funeral (it’s irrelevant!). Women usually wear the first smart black dress they find in their closets. Maybe the dress was ok (for her, given her style), even though it had a red belt/waistline, but I would have stopped there. The burgundy shoes were (pretty but) unnecessary.

Jenna: I think the lace was overdone here. Were those stockings? Really? (Don’t get me wrong, I DO like them, I just think a funeral is not the place for them.

Mona: She looked great. A very pretty dress, perfect cut, not too much cleavage – it worked out great for her build.

Finally, while I did put a lot of thought into this, you shouldn’t worry too much about it as long as you look smart and keep it simple. If you are attending a funeral, your main focus should be the family, not what you’ll be wearing. As long as it is something respectful and tasteful, the point of going is you being supportive. Be in the best attire possible, not for yourself or for a show, but to pay your respects.

I really hope I did not offend anyone with this post. I am only trying to be helpful here. The numbers show me that unfortunately many of you find this blog post because you just lost someone. My deepest sympathies go to all of you who have just lost a loved one. ❤

Love,

M.
